Annual Lecture Series

Please join us at the Church for a series of community lectures. Pertinent to state, national and international issues and events, the lectures encompass a broad array of
topics important in today’s changing and ever challenging world. You may choose to
attend one, a few or the entire group. The series, which is held from 5:00-6:00 p.m. is
free to the community, however contributions will gladly be accepted.
Monday, August 6 – John Schenck – Publisher of Edible Rhody. Mr. Schenck will be
the moderator of a panel which will discuss the Farm to Table phenomenon in Rhode
Island. He will be joined by several local chefs and farm owners in a new format to
introduce several of our local talented entrepreneurs. Following this Lecture, a special
10th Anniversary event for our donors will be held at the home of Mike and Sue Hazard,
450 Old Boston Neck Road in Saunderstown. Refreshments and several food stations
will be featured.
Monday, August 13 – Dr. Heidi E. Lane – Associate Professor of Strategy and Policy
and Director of the Greater Middle East Research Study Group at the U. S. Naval War
College in Newport. Dr. Lane will discuss the revolutions taking place in the Middle
East through the prism of the dictatorships that have controlled the region for the past
four decades and how these changes will affect the relationships among the Arab
countries, particularly Egypt and Syria.
Monday, August 20 – Gina M. Raimondo – Rhode Island General Treasurer, who has
dedicated her first year in office to redesigning Rhode Island’s state-administered public employee pension system. Under her leadership, Treasury has also updated the state’s
bond disclosure practices and launched Rhode Island’s first investor relations portal.
She will update us on other projects and planned future initiatives during the remainder
of her term in office.
Monday, August 27 – Dennis C. Hilliard – Director of the Rhode Island State Crime
Laboratory and an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Sciences in the College of
Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island. Since 1977, Mr. Hilliard has lectured in
over 200 programs and class forums on CSI@URI. In addition, he has been an expert
witness in the fields of fire debris analysis, basic serology, DNA testing, hair and fiber
analysis and blood alcohol. He has also been involved in civil cases which include
alcohol as a factor.
